R36S Genesis Emulation: Core Choice, Region Speed and Sega CD

The R36S runs Sega Genesis perfectly, which makes this one of the few guides on this site that is not about performance. It is about choosing a core by what it can play, understanding why some ROMs run visibly slower than others, and what the Sega CD and 32X add-ons actually need.

The Core Names Tell You What They Play

Genesis has an unusually helpful convention: each core's full name lists the Sega systems it covers. Read the name and you know what you are choosing between.

Genesis Plus GX unless you want 32X

Genesis is one of the few systems where you can afford the more accurate option. Our core management guide sets out the general rule for this device — start with the speed core, which for Genesis is PicoDrive — and Genesis is the case where you can reasonably depart from it, because plain Mega Drive emulation leaves headroom to spare on an RK3326.

So: Genesis Plus GX for the main library, on coverage and accuracy. PicoDrive if you want 32X, since nothing else will load those games, or if you are stacking Genesis alongside something heavier and want the cheaper core back. Neither choice will cost you full speed on ordinary Mega Drive titles.

Why Some Games Run Slower Than Others

If a Genesis game feels sluggish on the R36S, the device is almost certainly not at fault. The likely explanation is that you have a European ROM.

PAL runs at 50 Hz, NTSC at 60 Hz

The Mega Drive shipped in two electrically different versions. European consoles ran at 50 Hz and Japanese and American ones at 60 Hz, and most developers did not compensate — they shipped the same game timed to the slower refresh. A PAL ROM therefore runs about 17% slower than the NTSC release of the same game, with music pitched lower to match, and often with black bars top and bottom.

This is faithful emulation of a real difference, not a bug. If Sonic feels heavy, check whether you have (E) rather than (U) or (J) in the filename.

The fix is to prefer NTSC ROMs for anything action-based. Some games only ever released in Europe, and for those a core's region override can force 60 Hz — usually an improvement, occasionally with music or timing quirks in games that genuinely assumed 50 Hz. Try it and trust your ears.

Folders and File Types

Genesis ROMs go in the megadrive folder. The system has several accepted extensions, all of which work:

The folder name catches people out because md looks like the obvious choice and is what some other firmware families use. ArkOS wants megadrive, spelled out; Rocknix accepts either megadrive or genesis, so megadrive is the name that works on both. Sega CD Needs a BIOS, and Region Matters Twice

Sega CD is one of the few systems on the R36S that will not run without a BIOS file, and it needs the one matching your game's region:

Worth stating plainly because Dreamcast on this same device is the opposite: its files must sit in a /bios/dc/ subfolder. Sega CD does not work that way. Drop the .bin files straight into /bios/. Our BIOS setup guide has the full table if you are setting up several systems at once.

Region matters twice here: once for the BIOS you supply, and again for the 50/60 Hz behaviour above. A European Sega CD game with the European BIOS will run correctly and still run at 50 Hz.

32X: Possible, Not Comfortable

The 32X was a mushroom-shaped add-on that bolted two 23 MHz SH-2 processors onto the Mega Drive. Emulating it means emulating those two chips plus the whole Mega Drive underneath, which is a different order of work from Genesis alone.

On the R36S that lands it in the same category as N64 and Dreamcast: reachable, inconsistent, and worth approaching with low expectations rather than as a headline feature. PicoDrive is the only core here that will load 32X games at all, so if you want to try them, that is the core to select. The library is small — a few dozen titles — and the well-regarded ones are the 2D games rather than the 3D showcases, which is convenient, because the 2D ones are also the ones more likely to behave.

Controls: Three Buttons, or Six

The original Mega Drive pad had three face buttons. Sega later released a six-button pad, and a number of games — fighting games above all — detect it and change their control scheme accordingly.

The R36S has enough buttons for either, but the core needs to be told which pad to present. If a fighting game is missing attacks, or a game insists you are using the wrong controller, the pad type is the setting to look at rather than your button mapping. One genuine advantage on this device: as that guide notes, Genesis-era games were designed for digital input, so use the D-pad rather than the analog stick. It is more accurate for this library and it sidesteps stick drift entirely.

Display and Audio

Genesis output is 4:3 and the R36S panel is 4:3, so the aspect ratio needs no correction. The usual 320×224 source doubles cleanly to 640×448, which is why integer scaling is worth enabling here — it costs a small black border top and bottom rather than the blurring you get from stretching to fill 480 lines. On audio, the Genesis's FM synthesis chip is the source of its distinctive sound, and cores differ in how faithfully they model it. This is the one area where core choice is audible rather than theoretical. If the music sounds thin or wrong on a game you know well, trying the other core is a reasonable diagnostic — and see our audio guide if the problem is crackling rather than tone, since that is a hardware issue affecting every system.

Realistic Expectations

Genesis is among the best experiences on the R36S. The hardware is comfortably ahead of what the system demands, the D-pad suits the library, and the panel matches its aspect ratio exactly. Nothing here is a compromise.

Which means the only things standing between you and a working setup are the three details above: the right folder name, an NTSC ROM if you want full speed, and the right core for what you want to play. Sega CD adds a BIOS file. 32X adds a caveat.
